week 5 first blog- presention of self

First blog of session...
Let see how this goes...

This week's reading is "The Nature of Deference and Demeanour" by Goffman.  This reading looks the presentation of ‘the self’ and how we construct this presentation through many forms or social interactions, such as body language, the way we dress, the we look at someone and act around them and adapt ourselves to environment we are in, etc There is many different ways in which we present ourselves and portray what we thinking or feeling through these actions
“The ‘trivia’ of everyday life – touching others, moving closer or further away, dropping the eyes, smiling, interrupting – are commonly interpreted as facilitating social intercourse, but not recognised in their position as micro political gestures, defenders of the status quo. In front of, and defending, the political-economic structure that determines our lives and defines the context of human relationships, there is the micro political structure that helps maintain it. This micro political structure is the substance of our everyday lives”

Henley 1977 Body Politics p. 3

After watching the lecture and the presentation in class today it can be seen that we social construct ourselves to different scenes that we are in may it be how we dress or act, or what we say. For example I would dress different to attend Uni then I would to go to work and I would talk in a different vocabulary around my friends then I would around my grandparents. The presentation that was presented in the Wednesday 3:30 tutorial today was a very good presentation as it related the topic to modern day people like 2pac and The Kardashain sisters which allowed for an easier understanding.
We all act different as adjust ourselves to suit the situation and environment, with out even realising, until something like this study of it points it out....
